Dry matter &
stem-end rot
Know the quality of every avocado in seconds
Non-destructive and fast dry matter and stem-end rot
Our NIR-powered scanner measures dry matter, the strongest predictor of avocado maturity and eating quality, as well as stem-end rot, without cutting or destroying a single fruit. At under a second per scan, you can test far more of the batch, giving you an objective sample size that actually represents its quality.
What it measures
Get an instant, objective read on internal avocado quality. The system measures dry matter percentage and flags stem-end rot across your batch, making your quality control faster, more consistent, and fully digital.
How it works
OneThird's dry matter testing uses near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy to evaluate avocado quality in seconds. Scan the batch, and the spectra are converted by our algorithms and database into instant dry matter readings and stem-end rot detection. The same scanner also measures ripeness index.
All results are automatically saved to the OneThird dashboard or can be pushed into your own quality management system, fully traceable and ready for reporting at any time.
Everywhere in the supply chain, worldwide
Avocado quality decisions get made at multiple points in the chain, and OneThird works at every one of them. From growers checking maturity after harvest, to distributors verifying incoming and outgoing batches, to retailers confirming quality on arrival, all with the same objective standard, used by customers around the world.
That's possible because the scanner is standalone, portable, and battery-powered. No complex integration into your packing line, no fixed setup, just bring it wherever you need to measure dry matter or stem-end rot.
This level of digitization drastically reduces workloads, accelerates decision-making, and supports a more consistent, transparent supply chain.
How does nondestructive dry matter testing compare to traditional methods?
Traditional dry matter testing relies on cutting and drying a small sample. This destroys fruit, takes time, and only reflects a fraction of the batch.
OneThird's scanner measures dry matter non-destructively in seconds, across as much of the batch as you choose to check.
How many avocados can we scan per hour?
A batch of 10 avocados is scanned in about 1.5 minutes, roughly 400 avocados per hour.
How quickly are results available?
Results are available within seconds and are immediately accessible in the cloud platform. Reports can be shared across supply chain partners in real time, increasing transparency and credibility.
Does the scanner require any special training, or can our current QC staff start using it right away?
Implementation is straightforward. As the scanner fits directly into your existing QC process, with no changes to your current workflow required. Most customers are fully onboarded within two weeks. Our team supports you through the full process, so your team is up and running fast without disrupting your existing operation.
Where in the supply chain can dry matter testing be used?
Our solution works throughout the supply chain: after harvest, at the packhouse, at distribution and logistics centres for incoming and outgoing checks, and at retail.
Each parameter fits a different moment. Dry matter is usually tested before ripening begins. Ripeness index is typically checked later, to determine the fruit's ripeness state at that specific point in the chain. Stem-end rot can be measured at any stage.
Can I do a pilot with you?
Absolutely! We'd love to set up a pilot with you. A OneThird pilot is typically shorter than a full season, but gives you enough time to see real results across multiple batches and get a clear picture of the value for your operation.
