Quality assessment of
Avocado

Fast and nondestructive dry matter assessment

Our avocado quality assessment solution delivers fast results within seconds. Giving growers, distributors, and retailers the actionable insights they need to make confident, real-time decisions at every stage of the supply chain. Unlike traditional dry matter or ripeness analysis, which can take up to 48 hours and destroys the tested fruit, our method keeps every avocado intact and sale-ready.

Avocados growing - QC - OneThird

Digital quality assessment

Traditional avocado quality control has always come with a trade-off: accurate data costs you fruit. Cutting, pressing, or lab-testing samples means product loss at scale and blind spots across your supply chain.

OneThird eliminates that trade-off. Our NIR-powered scanner measures what matters internally, without touching the inside of a single avocado. Non-destructive, fast results, and large enough sample sizes to give you a reliable picture of every batch.

dry matter testing - avocado - OneThird

Non-destructive dry matter

Dry matter is the most reliable indicator of avocado maturity and eating quality. The standard method, drying samples in an oven, takes up to 48 hours and destroys every fruit you test, making frequent, large-scale measurement practically impossible.

Our scanner measures dry matter in one second using near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. All without cutting, preparation, or waiting. Measure entire batches rather than small samples, and every avocado tested can still be sold.

Our technology is supported by strong calibration models tailored to specific varieties and growing conditions, delivering highly consistent and actionable results across your entire operation.

Stem-end rot testing - avocado - OneThird

Detect internal stem-end rot

Stem-end rot is one of the most damaging quality issues in avocados. It develops internally and stays invisible until it is too late to act. By the time it shows on the outside, the fruit has often already been packed for premium channels or reached your customer.

OneThird detects stem-end rot before it becomes visible, so you can route affected fruit away from premium channels before it causes problems. Less waste, fewer complaints, and more confident decisions at intake and pre-pack.

Dashboard quality assessment - Avocado - OneThird

Your data in one overview

Manual data entries are no longer necessary. All quality results from your avocado scans give an instant view of whether a batch meets your specifications. Results are visible directly in your OneThird dashboard. Accurate, real-time data drives a more reliable supply chain and a final product that consistently meets consumer expectations, at scale.

Immediate access to this data gives quality managers the insights they need for better allocation decisions, or to build analytical reports that reveal trends across varieties, suppliers, and key quality parameters such as dry matter and stem-end rot. Prefer to work in your own system? Results transfer automatically into your QMS via API.

Avocados growing - QC - OneThird

Traditional methods costs avocados

Traditional QC methods cost you avocados. Our QC solution saves your fruit. On average, destructive testing costs a medium-sized avocado grower up to 3,700 kilos of avocados due to quality control each year. For large growers, that figure rises to up to 6,600 kilos annually. This is a significant and entirely avoidable yield loss.

With OneThird's non-destructive scanner, every avocado tested can still be sold. Our platform saves up to 90% of the fruit you would otherwise lose to the QC process itself.

On top of that, our technology saves you labor time. With results and insight in mere seconds instead of hours. All accurate, consistent, and objective quality grading.

What QC parameters can OneThird measure for avocado?

The scanner measures dry matter content, ripeness level, and detects stem-end rot. All non-destructively, using near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. Results are delivered within seconds per sample batch.

How is NIR spectroscopy used for avocado quality control?

NIR light is directed at the fruit and the reflected spectrum is analyzed to reveal internal properties such as dry matter content and early-stage stem-end rot. No cutting or preparation is required.

Is the scanner compatible with different avocado varieties?

Yes. Our calibration models are tailored to specific varieties to ensure accurate and consistent results across your operation.

How to detect stem-end rot before it is visible externally?

OneThird's scanner, using NIR technology, can identify internal stem-end rot before any external signs appear. Allowing you to act before the issue reaches the next stage of the supply chain.

Who benefits from non-destructive avocado quality assessment?

The solution is designed for growers, distributors, and retailers who need fast, accurate, avocado quality data to improve supply chain decisions and reduce waste.

What does implementation look like, and how does the scanner integrate with our existing packing line?

The OneThird scanner is a standalone  device. Place it where you need it and you are ready to scan.

It works at any stage of your operation, whether that is intake, pre-pack, or post-harvest on the farm. After some validation against your traditional QC method, you are fully operational. Most customers are up and running within one to two weeks.

All scan data feeds directly into the OneThird quality control platform, giving you a real-time digital record of every avocado assessed.

Can I try it out for a few months or do a pilot?

Yes, absolutely. For dry matter and stem-end rot measurement, implementation is straightforward and you will see results quickly, with no changes to your existing processes required. A pilot can start from three months.

During the pilot you receive real quality data from your own avocados, measured non-destructively on your own line. By the end of the pilot period, you'll have a concrete understanding of what the system delivers for your operation. Most customers tell us that once they see the data, returning to destructive and slow sampling is simply no longer on the table.
