Retailers that got it right

Avocado roulette costs retailers trust, sales, and fruit. The retailers below decided to fix that. Over 350 retailers worldwide have installed the Avocado Scanner. Below are a few of them sharing their results, in their own words.

Bilka Tilst - Avocado Scanner (2)

Salling Group, Denmark

Salling Group, one of Denmark's largest retail chains, was the first in the country to install the Avocado Scanner at their Bilka hypermarket in Tilst. The launch generated immediate press coverage from DR.DK and Stiften.dk, and the store's own TikTok post reached 11,500 likes and 6,500 shares within days of going live. The decision was driven by a clear commitment to customer satisfaction.

"We have been frustrated for years that we haven't fully cracked the code on delivering the best avocados to our customers. Together with our avocado supplier Nature's Pride, we are working hard to guarantee quality and taste. We believe this scanner, which helps customers find the best avocados, has brought us a step closer."

Avocados in more carts, 25% sales uplift

One retailer installed the Avocado Scanner and tracked the impact over two months. For them, the results were clear: avocado sales increased by 25%, corrected for any marketing effects running in parallel. Before installation, avocados appeared in 1.7% of all shopping carts. That number went up to 2.3% after the scanner went live.

Avocado Scanner - Germany Citti - OneThird

Citti Markt, Germany

Citti Markt in Kiel didn't just install the Avocado Scanner and left it. They treated it as a full in-store concept, designing custom signage around the scanner to amplify its results and guide shoppers toward it.

"We discovered the Avocado Scanner on social media and immediately felt it would be a natural fit for our concept. Our goal is to offer our customers the best possible shopping experience. That includes helping them select exactly the ripeness of avocado they prefer, every single time. By integrating this technology, we enhance the customer experience and strengthen trust in our fresh produce. The Avocado Scanner supports our own quality standards by making ripeness measurable and visible. For us, this is a purposeful innovation that brings our quality promise to life at Point of Sale."

Acocado Scanner - Billa Dinic - Sanlucar

BILLA Dinic, Austria

BILLA Dinic's avocado sales are up 96% year on year across the seven weeks we tracked, with 2026 outselling 2025 every single week. Some of that growth is normal year-on-year market movement. But growth like this, right after a rollout like this, points to the scanner accounting for a solid share of it. SanLucar helped make the installation possible by connecting BILLA Dinic with the Avocado Scanner.

Australian Avocado - Avocado Scanner press release

Avocados Australia Ltd.

Australia's avocado industry is renowned for producing some of the best quality avocados in the world! OneThird teamed up with the Australian avocado industry to launch an Australian-first trial of the retail ripeness scanner in March 2026, co-funded  by the Australian avocado industry and the Australian Government and as part of the Monitoring Avocado Supply Chain Quality project.

The Avocado Scanner landed on the Today Show, introducing the technology to a national audience and sparking immediate interest among shoppers and retailers alike. What followed was a wave of organic social media content.

That public buzz ran alongside a structured retail trial conducted by AHR on behalf of Avocados Australia, the national industry body representing Australian avocado growers and the driving force behind research and innovation across the country's avocado supply chain. AHR conducted a structured retail trial of the Avocado Scanner at Trim's Fresh, an independent retailer in Australia. The trial ran across a period that included several high-traffic events, making the results harder to isolate, but the observations were consistently positive.

The most notable behavioral shift: a 10% increase in shoppers who did not handle the fruit at all, and 38% of shoppers switched to using the scanner instead of squeezing. Reduced handling means fewer bruises and less waste before the fruit reaches a shopping basket.

"During the period when the device was installed, we saw a reduction in the number of consumers squeezing avocados and a 13% increase in sales post installation vs the week prior, at a consistent price. Although we cannot fully attribute the increase in sales to the scanner at this stage, the results are promising and likely warrant further investigation to fully understand the device's full impact on consumer behaviour."

Westfalia India - Avocado Scanner - OneThird

Westfalia Fruit brings new ripeness guidance to avocado shoppers in India

Westfalia Fruit, a global leader in the avocado industry, is helping remove one of the biggest barriers to avocado adoption in India by introducing in-store ripeness indicator technology with leading retail customers.

The Ripe-O-Meter is being introduced alongside Westfalia Fruit’s existing ripening programmes, packaging and in-store education. Together, these capabilities allow the company to support retailers not only with supply, but with the full consumer journey from shelf to eating experience.

“Indian consumers are increasingly discovering avocados, but knowing when the fruit is ready to eat remains an important barrier,” says Ajay TG, Market Unit Director India at Westfalia Fruit. “By making ripeness easier to understand at the point of purchase, we can give shoppers more confidence, improve the eating experience and help our retail partners build repeat demand for the category.”
