We are hiring!
Are you a Data Scientist on a mission? Read here to find out more...
Your Role
As a creative and curious Data Scientist, you are looking forward to solving a wide variety of challenges to enable our data to prevent food waste. On top of this, you have the programming skills to write quality code that works in production. Machine learning, forecasting, and analytics are at the core of what we do.
We are building a digital twin of the food supply chain. With the help of AI, we aim at decreasing food waste by real-time insights in the shelf life of fresh produce. To make this accurate and scalable, we need your help!
We're working together with our partners to develop a unique database of petabytes of data of fresh produce, including images and tabular data. With the help of these data sources, we create powerful algorithms that make a difference at our customer in their logistics and quality assurance processes. We are currently implementing our solution in the supply chain in the Netherlands, UK, Morocco and South Africa.
Responsibilities:
- Developing parts of the AI engine behind OneThird’s services
- Train, validate and deploy machine learning algorithms with multi-modal data sources, like images and tabular data
- Analysis and reporting on incoming customer data
- Translate technical results and project scopes to colleagues and other stakeholders
- Actively think of ways to make the algorithms more accurate and faster
- Work in a multi-disciplinary environment with specialists in machine learning, engineering and design
About you:
- Master’s degree or equivalent in Mathematics, Econometrics, Engineering, Statistics, Data Science, Physics, Supply Chain or Logistics
- Able to work in both the English and Dutch language both spoken and written
- 3-10 years of experience as a Data Scientist
- Software skills: You have worked with SQL and Python. You are familiar with python libraries like Scikit learn / SciPy, PyTorch / Tensorflow, Numpy, Pandas.
- Experience working with reporting tools like Microsoft Power BI, Tableau, Looker or similar.
- You have good communication skills to talk to our partners and reporting your results. We don't like long reports, but see rather concise and consistent results shared in the team.
- You love the challenge of a start-up, have a let's do it attitude, and are willing to pick up other responsibilities when that's needed to make us successful…
- You know something has got to change in the food chain, and willing to make a difference!
What we offer:
- Competitive salary, holiday allowance, and pension plan.
- Employee stock plan and 25 vacation days (based on FT contract).
- Flexible work policy with opportunities for personal and professional growth.
- A dynamic, fast-paced work environment where you can make a real impact.
Location:
Stadionplein, Amsterdam or Kennispark, Enschede. Expect to be there 3-4 days minimum working in office to work on customer projects. Meetings, analysing data, writing reports can obviously be done from home just as well. Working hours: work when you work at your best, but be available for our team meetings.
Typical work week
You will spend quite some time on developing and maintaining the machine learning pipelines that are fundamental to OneThird’s forecasting services. This will be 40%-60% of your time, where the aim is to standardize & automate model development from initial exploration to deployment. We are using modern and scalable frameworks like ML-flow, on top of Azure, which make up our analytic tech stack for tabular and imaging data.
Next to ML – backend development, you will also spend time analyzing incoming customer data, and thinking about ways to make the data actionable for our end-users. We aim at displaying the data through Microsoft’s PowerBI embedded in our web - platform. This means you will think of ways with our customer success managers about what is needed in terms of intelligence to have our customers save food!
Then some time will be reserved for research & development, together with our lab technicians, to grow the portfolio of produces that OneThird can forecast. You will perform low-level experimentation to see what biological processes play a role in the decay of fresh produce, and how this can be mapped to analytic models. This means you will work together with biologists and hardware engineers.
Besides all activities, you will present and discuss results within team meetings, to bring OneThird to the next level!
How to apply
Send your CV and a short motivation to miana.vanderkolk@onethird.io or apply via the form below. Together we are building a smarter, more sustainable food system.

OneThird way of working
We care about results and maximizing customer satisfaction. We care about commitment to our mission; preventing food waste and making a difference in the world. We value teamwork and face-to-face interactions, as it’s people who make the difference. But we don’t care about making hours in the office just for the sake of it. We don’t care about meetings for the sake of meetings. We understand some people are more productive in the morning and others later in the day. Which is why we are a hybrid company with a lot of flexibility. There are specific touchpoints when we all meet together, our morning daily check-ins, which can be done virtually. So we’re all aware of what’s going on. We’ll try to meet at least once a week face-to-face in the office, as some things are just better to do in person. And once every 6-8 weeks, we’ll spend a couple of hours together reflecting on our past successes and setbacks, reminding ourselves of our long-term goals, and setting new goals for the next 6–8-week period. But besides these touchpoints, we’ll let you choose where you want to work. If you feel comfortable in the office, we’ll see you there. If you’re more productive in your home office, don’t let us stop you!
Our mission:
Provide our customers with predictive real-time shelf-life information of fresh produce, enabling them to take more dynamic decisions in the supply chain to avoid food waste and save operational costs. Getting the right product, to the right place at the right time. Saving time and preventing waste.
Our vision:
Our vision is to become the objective standard for assessing quality of fresh produce from farm to fork, through building the ultimate digital twin database.
Our values & Culture:
Make an impact!
This one might not be a surprise; we are committed to make considerable environmental impact: Reducing food waste at our customers and therefore contributing to reducing CO2 emissions and fresh water use.
Lean Start-up Innovation
We strongly believe that radicle innovations need to be developed in close collaboration with customers. What is the problem to be solved; who is going to use it; how does it fit in (or replace) existing processes; and where are the biggest benefits for them. As a result we were already working in the field within 6 months after the start of OneThird and have never left.
Let’s make a difference by doing
We work on big ideas to fulfil our dreams. But we don’t only dream, we DO. We see the vision, create a plan how we get one step closer and then go after it. Sure, there will be a lot of challenges, but if you stop looking at the hurdles, but have the end result in mind, commit to it, and give it your all, we will get there, one step at a time.
Unique positioning in the market:
OneThird enables customers to assess fresh produce throughout the supply chain, from harvest all the way to the store using an easy to use handheld. We provide unique holistic parameters -like shelf-life and taste- which allows for immediate decisions after assessment. Data can be tracked and shared through the online dashboards within the supply chain. Offering a subscription pricing model, allows customers to pay-as-you-go and ensures continuous updates of the algorithms OneThird provide.
