OneThird, a data-driven fresh produce technology innovator, announces the newest version of their Avocado Scanner. This version provides an even higher accuracy level, of ≈ 90%, and features Dual LED technology as well as a new intuitive result screen. These two key advancements to the Avocado Scanner are designed to deliver an even better experience for shoppers and retailers alike. The Avocado Scanner, invented and made by OneThird, is immensely popular and already installed at more than 350 stores worldwide, ranging from Chile to Finland and from the Emirates to New Zealand.
Through highly automated AI-based visual inspection, OneThird enables users to rapidly and objectively evaluate key quality parameters, including size uniformity, visual defects, and color intensity. Within seconds, the system identifies deviations such as bruising, mold, white shoulders, misshapen berries, and discoloration. Users can zoom in on each berry for detailed inspection, enabling precise, consistent, and fully digitalized quality grading. As the data is collected in OneThird’s cloud platform, reports are immediately available and can be compared with other lots, enabling efficient and data-driven decision-making.
“The Avocado Scanner has already proven its value in retail locations across the globe. The scanner helps shoppers choose the avocado to their liking and delivers measurable results for retailers. With the Avocado Scanner, retailers can improve customer satisfaction, reduce waste, and drive avocado sales. This new version makes the technology even more reliable and easier to use”, says René Clerc, Business Unit Manager Avocado Scanner at OneThird.
With the Avocado Scanner, OneThird addresses a common consumer pain point: having to guess or pinch to determine the ripeness of an avocado. Through the addition of Dual LED, the Avocado Scanner becomes even more accurate. It now performs two measurements in rapid succession, a dual scan within a millisecond. Because each scan captures the avocado at a different point, the technology simultaneously measures two distinct locations on the fruit. This results in a more consistent and therefore better ripeness determination.
The new result screen was born from consumer and retailer feedback. Resulting in a ripeness thermometer as a result screen, a visual indicator that shows precisely where within or between ripeness categories the avocado sits. This is especially valuable for avocados that fall on the boundary between two ripeness stages, giving consumers immediate information and truly leaving the guessing of the avocado ripeness behind. The updated screen has already been pushed to all Avocado Scanners in the field.
Retailers worldwide, including major retail chains, have already installed the Avocado Scanner. With numerous scanners in operation in over 25 countries, OneThird brings improved technology and usability to a proven product that retailers already trust.
