OneThird has developed a method to predict shelf life of fresh produce, such as tomatoes or strawberries. This information helps our customers to make better and more dynamic logistical decisions resulting in less food waste!
We are looking to expand our team with a Data Scientist.
We are building a digital twin of the food supply chain. With the help of AI, we aim at decreasing food waste by real time insights in the shelf life of fresh produce. To make this accurate and scalable, we need your help!
We're working together with our partners to develop a unique database of petabytes of data of fresh produce, including images and tabular data. With the help of these data sources, we create powerful algorithms that make the difference at our customer in their logistics and quality assurance processes. We are currently implementing our solution in the supply chain in the Netherlands, UK, Marrocco and South Africa.
As a creative and curious Data Scientist, you are looking forward to solving a wide variety of challenges to enable our data prevent food waste. On top of this, you have the programming skills to write quality code that works in production. Machine learning, forecasting, and analytics are at the core of what we do.
Responsibilities:
What are your skills today?
Location: Stadionplein, Amsterdam or Kennispark, Enschede. Expect to be there 3-4 days minimum working in office to work on customer projects. Meetings, analysing data, writing reports can obviously be done from home just as well. Working hours: work when you work at your best, but be available for our team meetings.

OneThird way of working
We care about results and maximizing customer satisfaction. We care about commitment to our mission; preventing food waste and making a difference in the world. We value teamwork and face to face interactions, as it’s people who make the difference. But we don’t care about making hours in the office just for the sake of it. We don’t care about meetings for the sake of meetings.
We understand some people are more productive in the morning and others later in the day. We’ve been a hybrid office organization even before Covid hit the world.
There a specific touch points when we all meet together, our morning daily check-ins, which can be done virtually. So we’re all aware of what’s going on. We’ll try to meet at least once a week face-to-face in the office, as some things are just better to do in person. And once every 6-8 weeks we’ll spend a couple of hours together reflecting on our past successes and setbacks, reminding ourselves of our long-term goals and setting new goals for the next 6–8-week period.
But besides these touch points, we’ll let you choose where you want to work. If you feel comfortable in the office, we’ll see you there. If you’re more productive in your home office, don’t let us stop you!
Typical work week
You will spend quite some time on developing and maintaining the machine learning pipelines that are fundamental to OneThird’s forecasting services. This will be 40%-60% of your time, where the aim is to standardize & automate model development from initial exploration to deployment. We are using modern and scalable frameworks like ML-flow, on top of Azure, which make up our analytic tech stack for tabular and imaging data.
Next to ML – backend development, you will also spend time analyzing incoming customer data, and thinking about ways to make the data actionable for our end-users. We aim at displaying the data through Microsoft’s PowerBI embedded in our web - platform. This means you will think of ways with our customer success managers about what is needed in terms of intelligence to have our customers save food!
Then some time will be reserved for research & development, together with our lab technicians, to grow the portfolio of produces that OneThird can forecast. You will perform low-level experimentation to see what biological processes play a role in the decay of fresh produce, and how this can be mapped to analytic models. This means you will work together with biologists and hardware engineers.
Besides all activities, you will present and discuss results within team meetings, to bring OneThird to the next level!
